Five IRC Aid Workers Abducted by Rebels in Uganda
The International Rescue Committee has learned that a fifth IRC aid worker was abducted on Monday when rebels from the Lord’s Resistance Army attacked the Achol-Pii Refugee Camp in northern Uganda.
The day after the attack, the IRC was informed by the LRA that it was holding four IRC staff members captive. But the IRC confirmed today that a fifth staff member was seized Monday.
The LRA has relayed a statement to the IRC and demanded that it be broadcast on an international radio station in exchange for the release of its captives. As of 6pm Friday, local time, the men, all Ugandan citizens, had not been released.
For information about the LRA’s ultimatum and assistance for refugees uprooted from the Achol-Pii camp, please see earlier news stories here on the IRC web site.
