Multimedia Photo Essay: Care and Comfort amid the Rubble

Within hours of the devastating earthquake in Pakistan on October 8, the International Rescue Committee rushed emergency teams from its Peshawar office to aid survivors. A special team consisting of three counselors, who were among the first female humanitarian aid workers responding in the region, was dispatched to focus on women's issues. Team leader Laila Khan tells the stories of the survivors she met in the hard-hit town of Balakot, women whom she said did not come out to seek help but, "were mourning and waiting for their children and trying to stick together.
