New York Resetlement Youth Program Visits Swiss Mission to United Nations

Six students, primarily from Bronx International High School , visited the Swiss Mission at the United Nations. They attended a luncheon with Ambassador Staehelin, President of the UNICEF Executive Board, and five other UNICEF board members. The luncheon provided a forum in which refugee children could speak with some of the individuals who head one of the most notable agencies working internationally to alleviate poverty among children. The students talked extensively about their experiences in their countries and the difficulties and advantages of their adjustment to life in the United States . The students were able to express their opinions about topics such as foreign politics, education, and the effects of war on individuals.

The students were also able to learn about the board members. As agents working for human rights, the board members discussed their work as leaders of an organization aimed to assuage the effects of war in developing countries. They offered the students advice and guidance. This was an invaluable opportunity for the students to hold such a discussion about issues relating to refugees with prominent leaders, voicing their own concerns and learning with and teaching those whose work makes a difference in the lives of refugee children around the world.
