Aminata lives in Sierra Leone, the third most dangerous place on Earth to give birth, where one in eight women die from maternal-related causes. Skilled attendance during childbirth is considered the best intervention to ensure a safe, successful delivery, yet just 60 percent of mothers in Sierra Leone give birth with a midwife present, and only 50 percent at a health facility. more »

When asked to describe her mother, 12-year-old Priante takes a moment to choose the right word in English: “She is brave.” Priante’s mother, Alphonsine, is strong, indeed. In 2005, she and her husband fled violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo and lived in Malawi and Rwanda, where the family endured illness and poverty before resettling in the United States. more »
