Voices from the Field: One of the Poorest Countries on Earth

Martine Yatanza brought her malnourished son Blaise to the IRC-run hospital in Kaga-Bandoro, Central African Republic. The boy is also suffering from malaria. The child would probably had died if he hadn’t received care. Martine said that she had lost three children to disease already. The IRC’s assistance to the Kaga Bandoro hospital has helped lower the overall mortality rate there and in surrounding areas to three percent from nine percent. Photo: Peter Biro/The IRC.

The International Rescue Committee's Peter Biro is in one of the poorest countries on Earth, the Central African Republic.  The country faces a devastating health crisis that threatens to plunge the population even deeper into misery.  Peter has been visiting health centers there, and talks about the situation for the people he has met and what the IRC is doing to help.
