How We Help
The IRC currently implements innovative food security programs that include livestock support as well as emergency water, micro-dam and small-scale irrigation activities. The IRC also has introduced one of the most effective hygiene and health education projects in Eritrea, a critical component of IRC programming due to the near total lack of access to sanitation in rural areas.
Food security in general, and water and sanitation programs in particular, remain the highest priorities in the country. The IRC will continue to provide critical support to Eritrean communities suffering from severe drought and loss of traditional water sources such as rivers and shallow wells. Some people now walk up to four hours to obtain contaminated water. Likewise, education, hygiene and livestock programs are complimentary and essential components of the IRC strategy to improve health and livelihoods in target communities.
