Programs in Chad

Healthcare

The IRC provides comprehensive healthcare services in Ouré Cassoni camp through its health center and health post, and also manages the hospital in nearby Bahai village. In October 2004, we opened a reproductive health clinic in the camp.Itprovides  pre and post natal services, clinical management of survivors of sexual violence, and emergency obstetric care and referrals. Since August 2008, the IRC has also run a health center and health post in the Bredjing camp in eastern Chad It provides medical care, nutrition programs and reproductive health services.

Environmental Health

The IRC provides water to the Ouré Cassoni camp through a water treatment plant established in August 2004.  The plant produces approximately 95,000 gallons of potable water per day.  The IRC also manages camp sanitation issues, including waste control, vector control, garbage and animal carcass removal and hygiene promotion and education.

Protection

Through its protection program, the IRC raises awareness of refugee rights, increases community representation of vulnerable groups such as women, the elderly and the disabled, and also helps these groups access camp services.  The IRC has also arranged for community information centers, community spaces and a community alert network which identifies and supportsespecially vulnerable.individuals in need of services.

Education

As 60 percent  of the population of Ouré Cassoni are under 18, education is a key program at the camp. . The IRC has set up three primary schools  that serves  about 10,000 students, twenty preschools that serve  4,000 children and one secondary school f with around 300 students. The IRC provides learning materials and trains  refugee teachers and “animators”who work in the schools.

Child Protection

The IRC  runs several “child-friendly spaces” and three youth centers where children and young people can play, socialize, participate in  sports and take part in activities such as drawing and  writing a newsletter. The IRC  also offersinformal language classes and skills training for older youth such as carpentry.

Gender-Based Violence

Displaced women and girls are particularly vulnerable to violence, abuseand exploitation. The IRC is the only organization in the Ouré Cassonicamp, and one of the few in all of Chad, with a program that provides services to survivors of sexual violence  (or gender-based violence (GBV) and advocates on their behalf. The IRC helps make sure cases of sexual violence are properly reported, develops and monitors case management and referral systems, links survivors with \medical services, provides \psychosocial support and works to diminish the stigmatization of survivors.
The IRC also offers every woman and girl in Ouré Cassoni the opportunity to benefit from life skills activities, education and discussion sessions, and psychosocial support.
