Programs in Jordan
Violence Against Women
With support from UNIFEM, the IRC is collaborating with local organizations, UN agencies, and the Jordanian government to improve program quality and to lead efforts to challenge beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate or condone violence against women and girls in Jordan. In partnership with the aid group Jordan River Foundation and JordanÕs Family Protection Department, the IRC will oversee the training and coordination of 20 non-governmental organizations, government agencies and community-based organizations, and the training of at least 80 police and social workers, to improve the quality of services that address violence against women. The program also addresses the safety, health, psychosocial and justice needs of survivors of violence through establishing one-on-one counseling and helpline services at Jordan River FoundationÕs center in East Amman, aiming to reach at least 1,800 survivors.
Emergency Relief
In partnership with the Jordan Red Crescent, the IRC is assisting over 1,800 unregistered Iraqi refugees to meet their immediate needs by providing them cash assistance on a monthly or emergency basis. The IRC is also assisting 1,200 of these refugees to obtain longer-term support through linking them to UN welfare and other programs to help them improve their economic condition, such as vocational training.
Education
The IRC is supporting the Jordan River Foundation to organize after-school classes as well as arts and sports activities for Iraqi refugee and host community children to help them build self-esteem, catch-up on basic subjects, express their problems, and have social and recreational opportunities. Some 1,200 children and youth have so far benefited from this program in East Amman.
