IRC Sacramento Celebrates their ESL Program's 2nd Anniversary!
Since May 2011, a team of dedicated volunteers have worked with local IRC Sacramento staff to deliver high quality, free ESL instruction to refugees resettled by the IRC. Last month they celebrated their second anniversary as a program that focuses on developing refugees' language skills and confidence in a student-centered environment.
For the past year the IRC Sacramento ESL Program has run classes with certified ESL instructors Bill Sewell, Kelly Norman, Alana Sondheim, and Elizabeth Conway. This talented team has not only taught students every Monday and Wednesday evening, but also donated program materials, developed course materials, and promoted a consistently supportive environment for initial and continuing English education. IRC Sacramento's Program Coordinator, Leanne Cameron, Volunteer Program Coordinator Shadi Karajeh, and Employer Relations and Match Grant Support Assistant, Erica Smith all work to support the continued development of the program by recruiting, training, and overseeing the enthusiastic group of community volunteers who reinforce the classroom learning through conversation and tutoring with the refugees.
We look forward to the next year, during which we hope to continue using the ESL Program to connect the refugees with the wider Sacramento community.
