Determined to Become Leaders
Among the many programs of the IRC Boise office, one of the most inspiring and hopeful is the 4-H World Community Leadership Development Club that is a part of the IRC Boise after school program for refugee youth. This year Club members honed leadership and civic skills that they are using to address real needs in the community. The youth leaders chose two issues to tackle this year. The first is raising the awareness of Boiseans about refugee cultures in the community. The second, bringing to the attention of Boise decision makers the critical need to improve the local transit system so refugees may access employment opportunities and services more readily.
The youth have made a number of presentations to school faculty, community groups and local leaders; impressing everyone with their passion, leadership and commitment to making positive changes in their community. This program has a powerful impact on these young adults who are committed future college studies to become lawyers, engineers and medical professionals. Each expressed the desire to give back.
