A Small Treasure for Refugee Families
August 30, 2013 was a big day for interns at the IRC in Dallas. On that day, they delivered televisions and other electronics to newly arrived refugee families.
Refugees arrive to the United States with little or no personal possessions. The IRC helps them begin their lives in the U.S. by securing in-kind donations, such as the household appliances, televisions and computers. On this day interns were delivering these items. “Delivering donations to refugee families gives me a feeling that I can hardly describe,” says one intern.
Few things can replace the joy you feel in seeing someone who has survived hardship and trauma express excitement in receiving their first television or laptop. These are things taken for granted in most American homes. But for refugees, they represent a treasure.
