Teach English to Refugees in Abilene
The IRC in Abilene is currently recruiting civic groups, volunteers and faith based organizations to partner with IRC by providing English classes to local refugees. English is one of the top needs for refugees. English is vital for self sufficiency, job placement, and for the refugee to become and feel part of the Abilene community.
For the past two years the International Rescue Committee has been able to provide English classes to refugees at the IRC offices. As this summer comes to a close, the grant funding this program will come to an end. The IRC in Abilene’s vision is to find groups or individuals who are willing to adopt apartment complexes, family groups, or individuals to do on-site English classes.
Teaching English classes does not require formal degrees nor the ability to speak foreign languages. Additionally, it is a wonderful way to make meaningful connections with refugees while giving them the gift of language.
Eighteen interested community members from around the city came to the initial informational meeting held in early August and will soon begin teaching English. However the need is ongoing and more individuals and/or groups of people willing to teach English are needed.
If you are interested in getting involved in teaching English to our newest neighbors, or have any questions about the program, please call the IRC office at (325) 675-5643. Thank you all for your interest in working with refugees.
