BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
 
SCOPE OF WORK: The volunteer will assist in welcoming our clients and enhance the daily operations of the office. This volunteer also has the opportunity to work in one of the following departments: Reception and Placement, Immigration or Early Employment. The time committment is a minimum of 3 months, 4-6 hours a week or more, with flexible days and times. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Greet visitors and assist them with their needs
Answer and transfer calls to appropriate staff
Provide administrative assistance including data entry, filing, labeling and copying
Conduct client intake and follow-up phone calls
Accept mail from USPS and other mail affiliates
Support with outreach, development and journalism tasks
 
REQUIREMENTS: 
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Ability to effectively communicate and work as a team member in a cross-cultural environment and independently
Must be culturally sensitive and respectful of various backgrounds, lifestyles and beliefs
Fluent in English; Fluency in Arabic, Armenian, Farsi, Spanish and Chinese highly desirable 
Report volunteer hours monthly to volunteer management staff 
Respect client privacy and treat information as confidential
Flexibility, resourcefulness and an easy-going attitude a plus
