HomeWalk 2011: IRC-LA Steps Up to Help the City Combat Homelessness

In a city dubbed as the entertainment capital of the world with more than 250,000 millionaires, perhaps it is surprising to find out that almost 51,000 people sleep on the streets on any given night. With the highest unemployment rate in a decade, Los Angeles is also home to 1.6 million impoverished individuals and continues to reign as the homeless capital of the nation.

Fortunately, in recent years, Los Angeles residents have joined together in solidarity to combat homelessness. For the past four years, United Way of Greater Los Angeles has been hosting an event called HomeWalk, a 5K (3.1 miles) walk/run to raise awareness of homelessness, its causes, and ways to prevent it. The event has been hugely successful in the past. Through their efforts, more than 9,000 people have settled in permanent housing in just four years.  Solutions such as permanent supportive housing and rapid rehousing have proven highly successful in cities such as New York and Denver. In Los Angeles County, the solutions have over 85% success at keeping people off the streets.

The IRC will be participating in the 2011 HomeWalk on November 19th to show our support.  Please join the IRC’s team! With a registration fee of just $25, you can choose to either walk or run, and make the day a fun family event, while giving another family or person the gift of a new home! Please register with us today, and help put an end to homelessness! If you will be unable to attend the event, you can still help by donating online or becoming a ‘virtual walker.’
