Internship Positions at the International Rescue Committee in Los Angeles
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. The IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC provides opportunities for refugees to thrive in America; in Los Angeles and many other regional offices across the country, the IRC helps them rebuild their lives and achieve self-sufficiency. To accomplish this, IRC-LA relies heavily on efforts by our interns and volunteers.
Our interns contribute their time and energy in many ways. Here are some ways you can make a difference in a refugee’s life:
Program Coordinator Intern
The International Rescue Committee in Los Angeles provides ongoing core services to refugees, asylees, and low-income immigrants, but continually enhances current programs and develops new ones to better respond to clients’ needs. The Program Coordinator Intern will assist the Development Manager in coordinating and developing programs in collaboration with staff and volunteers, and assist in program implementation and assessment.
Volunteer Coordinator Intern
The Volunteer Department is committed to establishing strong mutually beneficial connections between the community and the IRC-LA office in order to garner monetary, in-kind and volunteer resources to be used to improve the quality of services for our refugee clients. The Volunteer Coordinator Intern will work closely with the Development Manager in areas of maintaining volunteer recruitment & retention, building community awareness, creating partnerships, managing donation pick-ups and fundraisers, and contributing to monthly e-newsletters.
Communications and Outreach Intern
The Communications and Outreach Intern will help IRC generate content for publication—articles, brochures and flyers, as well as assist with event planning. The intern will be responsible for researching possible interview subjects/story ideas, writing content and articles for the Web site and IRC newsletter, creating brochures, fliers, pamphlets, and additional materials which will be distributed to the general public.
Somali Awareness Intern
The Resettlement Services Program is the first point of contact for newly arrived refugees and offers support, guidance and counseling though all stages of resettlement. The Somali Awareness Intern will primarily be responsible for assisting Somali sponsors complete applications of interest for their family members, follow up with sponsors, and enter data into an online database.
Citizenship and Immigration Program Intern
The Immigration Department provides its clients with assistance in filing immigration applications, which will allow arrived refugees and newly approved asylees to become permanent residents then citizens of the United States. The intern will assist clients with filing various immigration forms and will serve as the contact person for families to check on the status of their applications. The intern will work with the Immigration case manager and the caseworkers to assist clients in filing Adjustment of Status, Citizenship, Employment Authorization, Travel documents, Refugee/Asylee Relative Petitions, and all other immigration applications.
Employment Program Interns: Research and Data Intern, Employer Outreach Intern, and Asylee Outreach Intern
Finding secure, livable wage jobs is one of the best ways to assist a refugee! The IRC helps refugees to become self-sufficient in the U.S. by identifying job openings, taking clients to interviews, and educating companies about the benefits of hiring refugees. The interns will provide administrative assistance such as researching new potential employers, searching for potential jobs for our clients, assisting in resume-writing, and developing a curriculum for a job skills training course.
