IRC Hosts International Women's Day Event
With help from the Tiyya Foundation, the IRC in Los Angeles hosted a beauty and make-over event for refugee women, on March 5, in celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD). Those in attendance also had the opportunity to participate in an economic empowerment and motivation workshops.
The goal of the event was to celebrate refugee and asylee women—their determination to build a better life for themselves and their families—as well as highlight personal achievements and honor their resilience.
This event echoed the United Nation’s IWD theme for 2011: “equal access to education, training and science and technology: pathway to decent work for women.”
Female beneficiaries received professional makeovers and photos, donations consisting of clothing and accessories, as well as useful employment advice from experienced staff and community volunteers. All women in attendance also walked away with a door prize, consisting of beauty products, donated by a local cosmetics company.
The CAO School of Aesthetics, a local Paul Mitchell partner school, provided the professional makeover services which included makeup artistry and hair styling, pampering that triggered many smiles and glowing reviews throughout the day.
Local vendors, such as Good Fellow Market and the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, provided refreshments for the event.
