START DATE: Immediately
DURATION: Minimum 3 month commitment, Full time preferred, at least 10-15 hours/week, Monday-Friday.
BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
SCOPE OF WORK: The volunteer will welcome clients and provide information vital to the success of newly arrived refugees, immigrants and asylees. The volunteer will gain expertise on all three core programs and work with both staff members and clients.
•Assess client interests and provide the resource that best addresses their needs
•Ensure walk-in clients are connected to appropriate staff member
•Answer basic questions about services and transfer calls on a multi-line phone system
•Assist with light administrative work as needed
•Must be comfortable with being outgoing, extroverted and engaging
•Must be culturally sensitive and respectful of various backgrounds, lifestyles and beliefs
•Fluent in English; Fluency in Arabic, Armenian, Farsi, Spanish is a plus
•Must be comfortable with answering customer phone calls
•Report volunteer hours monthly to volunteer management staff
•Respect client privacy and treat information as confidential
•Flexibility, resourcefulness, and easy-going attitude a plus
