IRC in Miami Monthly Health Fair
The amount of inexpensive, accessible junk food can be overwhelming to many newly arrived refugees. Everything is so new and appetizing; it’s hard not to indulge in everything! Health problems they never imagined are now a threat to them and their families. Because of this the IRC in Miami thought it was essential to inform the new arrivals on the benefits of nutrition and the dangers of eating such foods. On the last Friday of each month the IRC in Miami holds a health fair at our office.
With the generous help of Nelissa Berrocal, a licensed nutritionist and a professor at Florida International University, the attendees at the fair learn foods to avoid, how to read food labels properly, the inexpensive places to purchase produce, and healthy alternatives to the junk food that surrounds them. The IRC in Miami thanks Nelissa for donating her time and answering any questions the beneficiaries may have. Along with Nelissa, WellCare and Simply, two healthcare providers in Miami, provide bags of helpful material: such as, jump ropes, water bottles, toothbrushes, etc… WellCare also sponsors the water and healthy wraps we purchase for the beneficiaries to enjoy during the fair!
