Preview Screening Event in Miami for Documentary Film Half the Sky

IRC Miami Executive Director Suzy Cop and Regina Bernadin Program Manager of IRC Miami’s Anti Human Trafficking program, played a large role in the free preview screening event of Half the Sky:  Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide at the Little Haiti Cultural Center on September 27th which was hosted by WPBT2.   The event was attended by over 200 guests and included a reception and featured guest, actress Gabrielle Union.  The documentary, filmed in 10 countries and inspired by the best-selling book of Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, is driven by the growing awareness that empowering women is the best way to increase prosperity and stability around the globe.  Six talented actress-advocates Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union, Diane Lane, America Ferrera and Olivia Wilde, joined Kristof through Asia and Africa to meet face-to-face with inspiring individuals working to bring about change to women and girls.  The IRC also had a role in the film as actress Eva Mendes visited the IRC-supported Girls With a Future program in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

After the screening, Ms. Cop moderated a discussion with actress Gabrielle Union about her experiences while filming the documentary with Kristof in Vietnam and IRC’s Regina Bernadin and Dawn Thompson Assistant Executive Director of Kristi House discussed their programs here in South Florida, that focus on empowering women and girls that have fallen victim to human trafficking.    Both IRC in Miami and Kristi House provide assistance to victims of human trafficking, both foreign-born and domestic, through a wide-array of restorative services.  Both speakers also answered questions from the audience.
