New Roots Harvest Festival

Community gardener Nazma from Bangladesh showcases vegetables harvested at New Roots in the Bronx

Basil, Chinese eggplant, tomatoes, shiso, Swiss chard and Bangladeshi bottle gourds were some of the vegetables and herbs collected at this year’s second annual New Roots Harvest Festival at Drew Gardens in the Bronx. To mark the occasion, Melissa Cebollero, Director of Health & Human Services at the Bronx Borough President’s Office, shared a few opening remarks with Lisa Brochet, the IRC in New York’s Community Integration Manager. Cebollero was enchanted by the cultural diversity of the gardeners, stating that the Bronx was a borough of immigrants and “it is wonderful to see new refugees laying down their roots and sharing their cultures and traditions with the local community.”

While some refugees use the New Roots garden as a resource to stock their kitchens, others just enjoy the break from city life. Whatever the reason might be, the garden serves as a special place for newly arrived refugees to transition to their new life in New York City.
