Donations Day a Success for new Refugee Families
On Sunday, May 16th the IRC helped refugees access the clothes, household goods, and hygiene products they need with a Donation Fair. The Fair was laid out like a store in which refugees could browse through various sections and choose the items they needed to start their lives in Phoenix. They went home with essential products like soap, household items and clothing, but also specialty items, such as toys for their children and appliances. Over twenty five refugee families received thousands of dollars in donations.
This event was only possible through partnership with the wider Phoenix community. The day started off with a strong show of support as people brought in donations. Volunteers sorted donations, helped refugees gather their selections, and kept track of total donations. One new volunteer said, “The event was great and I really feel like I was able to connect with the refugees. It felt good to be able to give back.” Special thanks go out to Orangewood Presbyterian Youth Group, who helped restock the donations room at the end of the day.
