PLAY Mentor
The mentors will make a six month commitment to spend time with their designated adolescent on a weekly basis. Activities will address the specific needs of each mentee. Activities can range from homework help, to attending cultural events in and around Salt Lake City. At the end of the six months, the youth program coordinator, the parents of the mentee and the mentor can decide to extend the length of the program.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:
- Provide designated youth with specialized help
- Abide by the program parameters and policies as outlined in the trainings and mentor agreements
- Act as a mentor to a designated adolescent
- Model good behavior and reinforce positive behavior
- Provide feedback on each activity with the Youth Program Coordinator
- Offer feedback and ideas, as appropriate
- Help with transportation, as needed
- Other related duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
- Attend General Volunteer Orientation
- Submit application and reference check
- Fully attend one youth program session
- Pass background/DMV check, submit driver’s license and proof of insurance
- Submit letter of interest stating why they are interested in becoming a mentor
- Submit a one page biography that will help acquaint the mentor with the youth’s family
- Attend one-on-one training with the Youth Program Coordinator
- Agree to IRC policies and procedures governing the PLAY program
- Individuals must be a sophomore in college or older to apply to become a mentor
- Willingness to learn about cross-cultural communication and ethnic backgrounds of clients
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; additional fluency in a refugee language preferred
