International Rescue Committee (IRC)

The IRC Saturday CAHSEE Preparation Program provides a supportive, educational, and fun environment for students to develop the skills in English/Language Arts (ELA) to pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).  The program is held on Saturdays throughout the school year from 10am to 1pm.

To pass the exam,  students are expected to have a quality understanding of a variety of English/Language Arts subjects at a 10th grade level.  Since many of the program’s participants have only known the English language for a few years, passing the CAHSEE is an extremely challenging and intimidating obstacle that stands in the way of high school graduation.

The students receive focused instruction through large and small group work and are expected to improve in

• Writing Conventions
• Writing Strategies
• Reading Comprehension
• Literary Analysis
• Structured Essay Writing

Our dedicated volunteers teach in a relaxed format that leads to greater understanding of the curriculum while fostering meaningful relationships with the students.

CAHSEE Prep is part of IRC's Youth Programs.
