IRC Offers Summer School
Research shows that students in low-income neighborhoods show a drop of nearly three months of grade level equivalency each year during the summer, as compared to a one-month loss by middle-income students.
Refugee youth, in addition to predominantly being from low-income neighborhoods, typically arrived with little to no knowledge of English with interrupted or limited formal schooling. The existing gap combined with the detrimental effects that summer has on academic achievement are a cause for concern in terms of academic success and graduation rates of refugee youth.
Understanding this, IRC Youth Programs provides an intensive 6 week summer programs that focuses on English, math and science. Each year, over 100 students participate and 50 community members volunteer.
