IRC at World Refugee Day
At the recent World Refugee Day event in Balboa Park, the IRC played a major role. Several IRC staff members and clients spoke. April Moo and Madina Maho, pictured, along with Elizabeth Okello, shared their experiences of spending their childhoods in refugee camps and then adjusting to school and life in the United States. They each have adjusted well and shared lightheartedly about explaining 'prom' to their parents because they wanted to go to the dance.
Bob Montgomery, Executive Director of the IRC in San Diego, spoke of the history of refugee resettlement in San Diego. Bilal Musa, IRC Farm Educator, spoke of his personal experience adjusting to San Diego and served as an interpreter for Hawa, a Somali Bantu refugee, so she could share her experience, too.
IRC Microenterprise Clients provided delicious African, Asian, and Middle Eastern food.
