Now Hiring: AmeriCorps VISTA positions

The IRC in San Diego is now hiring for 6 AmeriCorps*VISTA positions to start in mid-January 2011.

What is AmeriCorps VISTA?
AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965, VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 40 years.

What VISTA Members Do
VISTA members commit to serve full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, strengthen community groups, and much more.  VISTA members receive a living stipend ($1,129 per month) and medical coverage. They also receive an education award of $5,350 at the end of their service to put towards students loans or grad school.

Volunteer/Youth Outreach Coordinator  send resume/cover letter to Sharon.Darrough@theIRC.org
-Recruit, interview, and place volunteers into the various programs of the IRC in San Diego
-Coordinate the summer education/community service program for high school youth
-Conduct outreach in the community to raise awareness about the IRC and volunteer opportunities

Food Security VISTA  send cover letter/resume to Anchi.Mei@theIRC.org
-Design and implement a prevention-centered health and nutrition curriculum for newly arrived refugees and the City Heights community
-Design and implement a Healthy Food Pantry that provides culturally-appropriate, supplemental food assistance to newly arrived refugees
-Coordinate volunteers and develop community relationships to donate healthy foods (including gleaning from local farms) for the Healthy Food Pantry
-Increase financial and program resources for the program

Immigration Department VISTA - send cover letter/resume to Laura.Lopez@theIRC.org
-Create outreach materials to attract more refugee clients;
-Conduct outreach to the refugee community;
-Coordinate and train on site volunteers; and
-Research and develop funding resources to ensure project sustainability.

Microenterprise Program VISTA  send cover letter/resume to Joel.Chrisco@theIRC.org
-Develop tools and trainings to assist refugee entrepreneurs with becoming “market-ready”
-Implement and organize a campaign to market refugee-owned businesses to the community
-Implement and organize a Center for Financial Opportunity public relations and awareness campaign
-Development of department annual report, programmatic brochures, and press releases
-Research and develop funding resources to ensure project sustainability

Resettlement Department VISTA  send cover letter/resume to Brent.Freeman@theIRC.org
-Recruit, train, and manage qualified volunteers for an active and growing Resettlement volunteer program
-Develop and implement a coordination and data tracking system between Case Workers, donors, volunteers, and other IRC departments to address specific needs of newly arrived clients
-Liaise and coordinate with donors to receive, track, and distribute donations to newly-arrived clients
-Conduct outreach activities, donation campaigns, and presentations with school and civic groups
-Liaise and coordinate with other service provider organizations in the area to access additional services for newly arrived clients

First Things First Family Learning Center VISTA send cover letter/resume to Colleen.Krause@theIRC.org
-Research and develop funding resources to ensure project sustainability;
-Secure donations from the community to assist refugee families;
-Assist with volunteer recruitment, training, and coordination;
-Assist in collecting data for evaluation purposes and reporting; and
-Raise awareness the program through media outreach, public relations, and marketing materials.
