The IRC in San Diego is now accepting resumes/cover letters for 5 AmeriCorps*VISTA positions to start in April 2012.  AmeriCorps*VSITA members contribute a year of national service under the umbrella of the Corporation for National and Community Service.   Before submitting a cover letter/resume, applicants should visit www.AmeriCorps.gov to learn more about the AmeriCorps program.    Final candidates will need to complete an application on the AmeriCorps website.

Volunteer Coordinator AmeriCorps*VISTA Position

The Volunteer Coordination VISTA will assist with volunteer recruitment and placement for the IRC office.  This position will also coordinate outreach to youth.

The tasks and activities will be to:
• Develop relationships with community and educational organizations for volunteer recruitment;
• Coordinate with other departments to ascertain volunteer needs;
• Recruit volunteers for the IRC Programs;
• Coordinate training and recognition activities for volunteers; and
• Coordinate summer outreach/educational program for youth.
 
Recommended skills and qualifications include:
• University degree;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Previous volunteer experience and interest in refugee/international issues;
• Excellent interpersonal skills and professional demeanor; and
• Strong computer and organizational skills.
 

Early Employment AmeriCorps*VISTA Position

The AmeriCorps*VISTA member’s activities will support IRC early employment program (called Matching Grant)  staff in the five IRC California offices to implement more efficient and effective programs that are geared toward (a) overcoming employment obstacles facing refugees and (b) identifying and developing relationships with prospective refugee employers.  This position works with IRC headquarters staff.

Tasks and Activities:
• Review programmatic and operational needs of early employment programs in IRC offices to identify priorities.
• Identify 3-6 projects that would advance programmatic performance of early employment programs in IRC offices
• Develop 2-3 training tools to increase staff capacity to effectively implement early employment programs (e.g. webinars, conference trainings, e-learning modules, job manuals, etc)
• Identify 2-3 programmatic best practices to be incorporated into early employment programs and develop associated programmatic and implementation tools

Skills and Qualifications
• Excellent writing skills
• Previous training experience a plus
• Bachelor’s Degree Preferred
 

Micro-Lending AmeriCorps*VISTA Position

The IRC credit building loan program has shown that a key factor to assisting low-income people to escape poverty is to help them to build or repair their credit.  The key objective of this position is to increase the effectiveness of asset-building programs by allowing partner agencies to offer their clients access to credit-building, vocational education, and emergency loan products.  The IRC will also increase internal lending capacity and implement more advanced risk assessment components.

Job Duties include
• Assist in the establishment of the micro-lending pilot program by finalizing systems and processes for offering loans through partner agencies, developing materials and training support for partner agencies, and tracking a key set of metrics to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of system and impact on clients 
• Strengthen the existing assessment and collection systems

Skills and Qualifications
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Organized and detail oriented
• Adept at learning new computer applications
• Ability to speak Arabic, Somali, or Spanish a plus
• Bachelor’s Degree Preferred


Food Security and Community Health AmeriCorps*VISTA Position

The IRC Food Security and Community Health Program will create a community garden, farmers’ market, and Fresh Fund in the city of El Cajon based on the success of these three programs in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego.  These programs provide opportunities for refugees and low income residents to grow and sell their own produce to their low income neighbors.   Learn more about the IRC Food Security and Community Health Department.

Job Duties include:
• Assist in the development and expansion of IRC’s Fresh Fund project to El Cajon
• Create new training curriculum and teaching materials about the impact of healthy eating on household budgets
• Assist in FSCH program evaluation data collection, reporting, and analysis.

• Excellent communications skills
• Ability to speak Arabic a plus
• College degree
