A Long Journey Results in Tamils Resettling in Oakland
Many Tamils, an ethnic minority consisting of about 20 percent of the population of Sri Lanka, fled from their homes during the course of that country's 25 year civil war that ended in May 2009. The difficulties for those people have not ceased, however, and many of them are seeking asylum in countries such as Indonesia and Australia, but are having difficulties finding anyone who is willing to help. The United States has allowed a few of these people to resettle in America, many of those coming to the Bay Area and are being resettled with the help of the International Rescue Committee.
The journey of these Tamil refugees was outlined in an article published yesterday in the Contra Costa Times. To view the article, click here.
