The Tukwila Community Garden Breaks Ground!
Work has officially begun on the Community Garden at St. Thomas! Twenty-five IRC clients and staff members joined forces with other community members to dig a 1000 foot ditch and lay a water line from the church down to the garden. Local farmer Sky Edwards showed future gardeners how to germinate the seeds of various plants including tomatoes, onions, lettuce, and cucumbers. Gardeners who attended have already started seeds in their own homes and will transfer them to the garden when it opens on April 30th.
The Community Garden at St. Thomas has seventy 10’ by 10’ plots available for farmers and gardeners to grow a wide variety of crops in. Over 30 IRC clients have already secured their plots and are excited at the opportunity to grow and consume produce from their home countries. The Garden Committee and St. Thomas Parish are excited to provide this opportunity.
Work will continue on the garden throughout March and April with plowing and tilling being completed on March 26th. If you’re interested in volunteering during a work party or would like to donate monetarily to help the garden afford tools, a fence and children’s play area please contact Evan Perry or Dal Diyali at 206-431-0333.
