Sarah Wayne Callies and the International Rescue Committee

Sarah Wayne Callies is a long-time supporter of the International Rescue Committee (IRC). In this video, she speaks of the IRC’s work assisting refugees and her role as an IRC Voice, drawing parallels between the experience of the character she plays in the AMC TV series “The Walking Dead” and the hardship and trauma that refugees endure.

IRC drought response: caring for malnourished children

Dr. Milhia Kader works at an International Rescue Committee hospital in Dadaab, Kenya, treating refugees who have fled drought and famine in neighboring Somalia. Dr. Kader says that 17% of children arriving in local refugee camps are malnourished. Her unit provides lifesaving care for kids who have severe malnutrition with medical complications. She introduces us to 3-year-old Aden, one of her many young patients who have improved considerably with treatment from the IRC.

Pakistan floods update

A year after record monsoon floods inundated 10 percent of Pakistan, the International Rescue Committee continues to help Pakistanis rebuild and recover. One in ten people was directly impacted by the floods, and many communities weren’t prepared for this year’s monsoon season. The IRC’s Ned Colt has this update from Pakistan.

IRC drought response: Vaccinating children

Dadaab refugee camp is now home to 400,000 people, making it the largest camp in the world. As people continue to flee drought and famine in Somalia, over 1,300 arrive at this already crowded camp daily. The IRC is on the ground, vaccinating children to protect them from the spread of disease.

After the flood: Pakistan, one year on

In May-June 2011, Euan Robinson, IRC policy and advocacy officer, travelled to Sindh province in southwest Pakistan to learn how communities are recovering from the 2010 floods. Their experiences have been documented in a short film, After the Flood, which highlights the experiences of flood survivors one year on, reveals the scale of ongoing suffering and shows what the IRC is doing to help.
