This is Asha's Day

Asha has lived in Kenya’s Dadaab refugee complex since she was a year old. Forced to marry at 14, she endured routine beatings and threats from her husband. But with medical care and counseling from the IRC, she began to heal and now teaches girls about health, managing money and how to protect themselves from violence. (For her protection, this woman’s real name and photo do not appear here.)

Her Challenge

In East Africa and other crisis zones, the threat of assault follows women like Asha long after they flee conflict or disaster. As displacement, persistent destruction and lawlessness breed more violence, women and girls face abuse wherever they go — even at home — and may be forced to exchange sex for survival.

The solutions

During emergencies and more longstanding crises, the IRC provides skilled medical care and counseling to survivors of violence like Asha. In the aftermath of war, we help women and girls build their educational and economic futures and we engage entire families in addressing the root causes of violence against women.
