6 Things You Can Do This Summer To Help Refugees in Charlottesville

Volunteer at New Roots

The IRC in Charlottesville’s New Roots program operates community gardens for refugees to grow fresh, culturally familiar vegetables.  We invite the community to volunteer on Tuesday evenings from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.  The location rotates each week; first and third Tuesdays: The Haven Garden (corner of Burnet and Almere), second and fourth Tuesdays: New Roots Farm (410 Old Lynchburg Road). No previous experience required.  Please bring water bottle, work clothes, and energy. No dogs, please. Children are welcome under complete supervision.  Please email NewRoots.Cville [at] rescue.org if you have questions about volunteer workdays.

Donate summer activities

School is out which means long days for summer fun.  Help bring a little sunshine to a refugee child’s day by donating coloring books, crayons, chalk, bubbles, jump ropes, soccer balls, or even bicycles (and helmets!)  Donations can be dropped off at the IRC office (609 E Market St) Mondays and Wednesdays 9am-12pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays 2-5pm, or Fridays 9am-5pm.  Please email Charlottesville [at] rescue.org if you have questions about donating.

Shop the Michie Market Farm Stand

Michie Market, New Roots’ very own farm stand, is open Thursday evenings, 5-6:30pm. Located on Michie Drive (behind Whole Foods), the farm stand offers locally-grown, spray-free vegetables grown by refugee farmers.  Come early for more popular items like bitter melon and pumpkin shoots.

Call your elected officials

Stand with refugees and call on elected officials to support pro-refugee legislation at the local, state and federal level.  Visit IRCAction.org to get the latest updates and talking points for calling your elected officials.

Donate supplies for students returning to school

This fall, refugee students will return to school, many for the first time in the US.  Help students start their school year with the right tools.  Donate backpacks in gender-neutral themes and colors (these ones on Amazon are great), school supplies, children’s socks and underwear (new, please), and shoes to the IRC.  Donations can be dropped off at the IRC office (609 E Market St) Mondays and Wednesdays 9am-12pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays 2-5pm, or Fridays 9am-5pm.  Please email Charlottesville [at] rescue.org if you have questions about donating.
