Even throughout the winter months, the IRC in Atlanta’s New Roots Garden Club at Clarkston High School stays active and busy! With a lot of help from our generous friends and community partners, students experienced and enjoyed a variety of engaging workshops in the lead up to spring.

Clarkston High School is one of the most diverse high schools in the country, with youth from over 50 countries speaking more than 40 languages. The IRC’s New Roots curriculum teaches students about sustainable gardening, healthy eating and cooking, active living and leadership skill development. During our afterschool Garden Club and stipend-based Food Justice Internship program, students develop valuable leadership and work skills through maintaining and managing the school gardens, leading community service projects, making field visits to food production sites, and learning how to make a positive impact towards addressing the inequalities of the food system.
Although Clarkston High School is now closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our New Roots Garden Club and stipend-based internship program continue virtually, utilizing innovative methods to continue our learning and sense of community. Stay tuned for more updates on these virtual adaptations!
