The IRC in Charlottesville is excited to participate in the 17th Annual Charlottesville Festival of Cultures, which is taking place online May 7-13, 2021. The Festival of Cultures is a space where the community can meet, share in, and learn about each other’s cultures. This family-friendly event is virtual this year and includes music, dance, cultural presentations and storytelling through permanent exhibits, interactive discussions, and engaging performances. The event is an opportunity to build bridges of understanding between new Americans and established residents, and between different cultures residing in our community.
The IRC will be hosting a live, interactive cooking demonstration with former refugee turned business owner, Khadija Hemmati of Khadija’s Kitchen. The event will take place on Monday, May 10th, at 6pm. Khadija will be preparing baklava, and will provide a list of ingredients in advance, so participants can cook along with her. The event will be moderated by Heidi Gordon, an English language teacher at [email protected] and teacher of IRC’s English classes since 2002.
This event is FREE and open to the public. Please register in advance at https://rescue.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYsdu2vqjopGd2rPeV8N-XoQyBLVDf6G6Rk. The Festival of Cultures is organized by Thomas Jefferson Adult and Career Education (TJACE) at Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC).
