The IRC in San Diego offers a variety of unpaid internships for recent graduates and students currently enrolled in an educational institution. Please see below for currently available internships.
Internship Application Process:

- Apply online here, a resume is required.
- The Volunteer Coordinator will reach out to you for a brief phone interview.
- If successful, you will be moved for a department interview where specific guidelines will be set.
- If successful, you will be given a background check and will follow the same steps as a volunteer.
- Upon your first day, your supervisor will map out your internship length, goals, and progress.
Summer Career Academy 2017 Intern
Mandatory June 26th to August 2nd availability, 2 days minimum a week, times may vary for fieldtrips though typically 4-8 hours per day at the IRC El Cajon Office.
Responsible for creating, coordinating and facilitating daily icebreakers, leadership and team building activities for a group of 15 youth, assist the Work Readiness Trainer to facilitate class (resume building, job interview skills, etc.), chaperone group fieldtrips (LA, Ropes Course, SeaWorld, College tours, Job Interview Clothes shopping, etc.), create and facilitate a special interest and interactive workshop to prepare youth for various educational and career pathways *Optional special project.
Experience working with youth ages 16 to 24 and English Language Learners, strong Intercultural communication skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from other cultural backgrounds, proficiency in a foreign language is preferred but not required, comfortable leading and managing youth in a classroom settings and outdoor public spaces, clean driving record and own vehicle for field trips, primary availability during IRC business hours (Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm), and strong Interest in mentoring youth.
Middle School Summer Refugee Academy Intern
Mandatory June 23rd training and availability from June 26th to July 20th, Monday through Thursdays 9AM - 12PM and/or 12PM - 5PM and Fridays for 4 hours at the City Heights IRC Office
Expose newly arrived middle school refugees to various community programs (community engagement), to support the language and literacy development of middle school refugee youth, to mentor newly arrived middle school refugees, provide small group instruction to middle school new arrivals, provide foundational language and literacy instruction using ESL strategies, administer standardized progress monitoring assessments on a weekly basis, and help drive clients to community activities
Experience working with middle school students, experience working with English language learners, experience teaching/tutoring early language and literacy skills, able to drive clients Mondays-Thursdays
Center for Financial Opportunity
Economic Development Intern
Minimum 3 month commitment; At least 10 hours per week; Flexible schedule during regular business hours; City Heights and El Cajon Office.
Assist with program intakes, inquiries and orientations; Analyze applicant demographic and financial data to determine enrollment eligibility; Audit application and supporting documents within enrollees case files for accuracy and completeness; Review and record technical assistance and financial literacy services provided utilizing Efforts to Outcomes Software; Coordinate with enrollees to enable acquisition of stated asset goal purchase; Audit program financial data on a monthly basis to track progress utilizing DownHome Lending Software; Provide technical assistance to program participants regarding program and purchase processes; Support Asset Building Coordinator with the development of program materials; Assist Asset Building Staff Coordinator with various administrative and logistical tasks as assigned
Currently enrolled in post-secondary education - interest in economic development a plus! Superior organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail; Excellent cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills with preference for Arabic, Somali, or Farsi speakers; Strong internal drive with the ability to work proactively without continuous oversight; Solid understanding of Microsoft Office; Patience, flexibility and creativity
Microenterprise Program Intern
Minimum 3 month commitment, 10 - 15 hours per week typically, schedule and number of hours is flexible. City Heights Office.
Support the coordination of training sessions, technical assistance, industry and market research, and other areas related to business start-up and expansion; Prepare and audit client case files; Assist in data entry and data quality management; Assist Microenterprise staff in expanding outreach efforts for business trainings and workshops.
Ability to work independently, be a self-starter and maintain responsibility for multiple tasks; Fluency in Arabic or Farsi preferred; Some business background/experience preferred as well as customer service experience; Strong computer skills preferred; Experience in working with diverse populations a must.
Farmers Market Coordinator and Liaison
Minimum 3 months; Thursdays 2:30-6:30, flexible, at El Cajon Farmer’s Market.
Help market coordinator coordinate market events; Outreach to the community; Help with the Fresh Fund table at market; Survey customers
Flexibility, Arabic fluency is preferred.
