The IRC in San Diego offers a variety of unpaid internships for recent graduates and students currently enrolled in an educational institution. Please see below for currently available internships.
Internship Application Process:
- Review currently available internships below and choose your top 3 position choices.
- Apply online here, a resume is required.
- The Volunteer Coordinator will reach out to you for a brief phone interview.
- If successful, you will be moved for a department interview where specific guidelines will be set.
- If successful, you will be given a background check and will follow the same steps as a volunteer.
- Upon your first day, your supervisor will map out your internship length, goals, and progress.
Youth Programs Intern
Late August/September to mid December 2017; Flexible schedule.
Assist in administrative and logistical tasks such as: data entry in different databases, filing, organizing files, etc. Support Youth Programs staff with other assigned tasks and projects. Assist with work readiness including job searches, help completing job applications, explaining and helping create resumes/cover letters, going over interview questions, etc. Present creative ideas to create a positive and enriching environment for all participants.
Patience and flexibility. Experience working with youth ages 16 - 24. Clear understanding of U.S. work culture. Experience working with refugees, English language learners and/or working with others from different cultural backgrounds.
Center for Financial Opportunity
Economic Development Intern
Minimum 3 month commitment; At least 10 hours per week; Flexible schedule during regular business hours; City Heights and El Cajon Office.
Assist with program intakes, inquiries and orientations; Analyze applicant demographic and financial data to determine enrollment eligibility; Audit application and supporting documents within enrollees case files for accuracy and completeness; Review and record technical assistance and financial literacy services provided utilizing Efforts to Outcomes Software; Coordinate with enrollees to enable acquisition of stated asset goal purchase; Audit program financial data on a monthly basis to track progress utilizing DownHome Lending Software; Provide technical assistance to program participants regarding program and purchase processes; Support Asset Building Coordinator with the development of program materials; Assist Asset Building Staff Coordinator with various administrative and logistical tasks as assigned
Currently enrolled in post-secondary education - interest in economic development a plus! Superior organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail; Excellent cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills with preference for Arabic, Somali, or Farsi speakers; Strong internal drive with the ability to work proactively without continuous oversight; Solid understanding of Microsoft Office; Patience, flexibility and creativity
Microenterprise Program Intern
Minimum 3 month commitment, 10 - 15 hours per week typically, schedule and number of hours is flexible. City Heights Office.
Support the coordination of training sessions, technical assistance, industry and market research, and other areas related to business start-up and expansion; Prepare and audit client case files; Assist in data entry and data quality management; Assist Microenterprise staff in expanding outreach efforts for business trainings and workshops.
Ability to work independently, be a self-starter and maintain responsibility for multiple tasks; Fluency in Arabic or Farsi preferred; Some business background/experience preferred as well as customer service experience; Strong computer skills preferred; Experience in working with diverse populations a must.
