The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Atlanta is thrilled to announce Amal Abdi as our new Logistics Manager. Amal first joined the IRC in Atlanta in 2010 as a case aide and interpreter and was hired as Logistics Assistant in 2016, serving alongside outgoing Logistics Manager, Steffani Meier, who is moving on to IRC HQ's Processing team. As such, Amal brings a wealth of first-hand experience to this critical position.
The Logistics Manager oversees the safe arrival of refugee families, managing a team of expert staff who set up fully-furnished apartments, greet refugees at the airport, welcome them to their new home, and provide ongoing interpretation and cultural orientation. The U.S. Department of State has agreed that the IRC in Atlanta has the capacity to provide resettlement services to 580 newly-arrived refugees in fiscal year 2019, a projected increase from the 411 individuals we welcomed to Georgia in 2018.
IRC Atlanta Caseworker, Dede Shimiyimana, who first came to the U.S. through the refugee resettlement program in 2015, shared his appreciation for our new Logistics Manager: "Amal was the one who got me and my family from the airport when I landed in America, and the only word she used in Swahili was Muzee Karibu (meaning old man welcome) and this statement is a sign of respect in Congolese culture. The word she used made me happy in the land. I can’t hold my gratitude for your success Amal!"
In this new role, Amal also oversees the IRC in Atlanta's Interpretation Services, with experienced and trained professionals offering interpretation in more than 15 languages to community-based service providers. Please contact Amal at Amal.Abdi [at] Rescue.org or 678-636-8953 for rates and availability.
