On the left a man in warm outdoor gear smiles at camera. In the center, a group of four people smile while wearing running gear. On the right, the backs of six people are seen hiking up a trail.

Move-a-Thon registration now open. Get a move on this May to help refugee & immigrant communities in Washington!

What

The IRC in Seattle's Move-a-Thon encourages folks to get outside, while raising funds for newcomers and survivors of trafficking in our community. Over the past year, the pandemic has presented many challenges for the people we help at the IRC, but it's also shown the tremendous power we have when we come together as neighbors to support one another. The Move-a-Thon is a chance to take collective action toward a more welcoming Washington for all.

Who

All are welcome in the Move-a-Thon! We encourage participants of all ages to join, making this a great opportunity to engage the whole family. Participate individually or team up with family, friends, classmates, or colleagues. Sign up now to start building your team in time to get moving in May!

When

Sign up now and start recruiting pals to join your team. There is no fee or minimum donation required to participant. From May 1 - 31, 2021, track your miles and raise funds to support the IRC's local programs helping refugee and immigrant communities in Washington. At the end of the month (date TBA) we'll have a fun, virtual closing ceremony and announce prizes for individuals and teams who log the most miles and/or raise the most funds.

How

The Move-a-Thon is a friendly competition, but it's not a traditional race. All kinds of "person-powered" activities where you can track distance are welcome: running, hiking, cycling, roller blading, paddling - you name it! You can collect pledges per mile or ask family & friends to make a flat donation to your fundraiser. Never fundraised before? No problem! IRC organizers will support you every step of the way. Peer-to-peer fundraising is a great way to share your personal motivation for supporting this cause and why you're passionate about creating a welcoming community for newcomers. Check out the FAQs below for more tips and guidance for a successful Move-a-Thon campaign.

How do I create my fundraiser?

Create or join an existing fundraising team by clicking "join" at the top of the main Move-a-Thon campaign page on GoFundMe Charity. Once your fundraiser is created, you can easily add additional team members, set fundraising goals and track group fundraising efforts, share to social media, and personalize with your own photos, videos, or updates. It's a simple platform to use and IRC organizers are here to offer support should you run into any challenges. Check out our guide for creating your GoFundMe Charity fundraising page/team.

I'm new to peer-to-peer fundraising. How do I get started?

Peer-to-peer fundraising is a great way to share your personal motivation for supporting this cause and why you're passionate about creating a welcoming community for newcomers. Set a fundraising goal, collect pledges per mile, and/or ask family & friends to make a one-time contribution to your fundraiser. We encourage you to communicate regularly with your network to keep them updated on your progress throughout the month and to thank them for their support. Check out our Move-a-Thon Fundraising Tips and Social Media Toolkit for more guidance and ideas!

How do I track and report my miles?

Use Strava, a free app allowing you to record your miles on the go. Join the IRC Move-a-Thon Club in Strava to automatically tally your miles at the end of each week and compare your mileage with other participants in real time. If you prefer not to use Strava, you can record miles using your method of choice and report those to the IRC using this form or by emailing us.

Are donations tax-deductible?

Yes! Supporters will receive a tax acknowledgement electronically for all donations made through GoFundMe Charity. If you collect cash or check donations offline, IRC can help you count those toward your online fundraising total and issue offline tax acknowledgements.

Can donations or participation be matched by my employer?

Many companies will match donations and/or time you contribute to charitable causes. It's best to check directly with your employer, and IRC can ensure you have all the documentation you need to access match opportunities.

Can my company or community group sponsor the Move-a-Thon?

Yes! A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. Please get in touch with Stephanie at Stephanie.Killough [at] Rescue.org for more information.
