Earlier this month, IRC in Charlottesville Executive Director, Harriet Kuhr, and IRC in Richmond Site Manager, Justin Gandy, met with Virginia 7th District Representative Abigail Spanberger at the Representative’s Glen Allen Office. They shared with her the programs and services the IRC provides to the community as well as the contributions that refugees make to our communities, providing a skilled and reliable workforce, starting businesses, buying homes and growing the economy. They also discussed concerns for the future of the refugee resettlement program in the United States, and shared information about the GRACE Act, which would set an annual minimum admission level of 95,000 refugees each year, in line with America’s historic average goal.
While meetings like this between IRC representatives and elected officials are critical to increasing awareness of issues affecting refugees and immigrants, , it is just as critical that elected officials hear from community members themselves, their constituents, about the issues that matter most to them. Please ask your elected officials to support the GRACE Act.
