In August, the IRC in Atlanta’s Adult Education and Youth programs launched a joint School Supply Drive to collect Back-to-School Kits to ensure the parents, young people and families that we serve have everything they need as they adjust to the realities of remote learning.
The back to school process can be challenging at any time but is especially difficult to navigate this year, and several IRC clients mentioned the need for school supplies including an uncertainty about what would be essential and how they should prioritize it in their family budget. Thankfully, our generous supporters and members of the wider community rallied quickly to respond to our call for supplies.
Across two “phases” of the drive so far, we have received more than 100 school supply kits for Early Childhood, Elementary and Middle/High School students, as well as generous monetary donations to purchase additional supplies. Our team is currently delivering the kits to students; a few of them share their gratitude below.
“Miss. Cait, I received the box with supplies. Thank you to everyone that involved in doing this. May God Bless them. Also, it is much more than I expected. :)"
“Omg thank you so much for the school supplies wallah I really appreciate it. I didn't expect to get all these things. I wanted to go buy most of these things that I got them today."
“Thank you very much Ms. Cait and all of the staff in IRC who support students with school supplies. I love it <3."
It’s not too late to sign up to provide a kit! We are still collecting Middle/High School supply boxes and will host one last drop-off event this Saturday, October 3, from 12pm – 1pm at the IRC in Atlanta office, 2305 Parklake Drive NE, Suite 100, Atlanta, GA 30345. With school boards meeting to discuss plans for returning to in-person learning as early as October, our students need this extra support now more than ever. Learn more and sign up here.
Finally, we are overjoyed to report that our generous friends at Decatur First United Methodist Church have offered to provide any remaining School Supply Kits we need after our drop-off this Saturday. This means that every student in our programs will receive the supplies they need to succeed this school year. Thank you all so very much for supporting the families we serve.
