“A New American in Charlottesville”

Last updated

"I was born twice. Once when I came to this to life. And when I became [U.S.] citizen, I was born again." These are the words of Ahmed, a young man who now calls Charlottesville his home, and the United States his country. The child of Palestinian refugees, he was born in Iraq and spent his childhood in the capital city of Baghdad. When war broke out, however, Ahmed and his family tried to flee to Syria and ended up in a refugee camp on the border between Syria and Iraq. After many years of waiting, the family was resettled in Charlottesville in 2010. In honor of Citizenship Day on September 17, the IRC released this video detailing Ahmed’s story, and his journey to achieving his dream of becoming an American citizen.
