Get involved this summer with IRC New Roots!
Michie Market, New Roots’ own farm stand, opens June 7 at 2100 Michie Drive in the big field and will run Thursday evenings, 5:00-6:30pm through October. Stock up on your farm stand favorites and try something new with our local, (non-certified) organically-grown produce. Lots of summer fun will also be happening at the market including cooking demonstrations and free taste testing, lawn games, soccer, kids’ activities and more! Like our Facebook page for regular updates and to see the summer schedule of activities.
Volunteer Work Days (Tuesdays and Saturdays)
Come get your hands in the dirt at volunteer workdays, held at New Roots Farm and our garden sites. Regular workdays are held each Tuesday evening from 5:30-7:00pm at New Roots Farm (410 Old Lynchburg Road, Charlottesville). If possible, RSVP to newroots.cville [at] rescue.org, but drop-ins are also welcome! Workdays are also held once per month on Saturday mornings and rotate between our farm and garden sites. Sign up for Saturday workdays here. Always dress for the weather and the work, and be sure to bring water and sunscreen. Children are welcome as long as they are kept under constant supervision and parents are aware of the risks of being on a farm. Volunteer workdays will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.
If you have questions or would like to join our listserv to receive regular updates about workdays, email newroots.cville [at] rescue.org and follow us on Facebook.
Cooking Demos at City Market
New Roots will be cooking up fun and free samples again this year at City Market! Join us on the third Saturday of the month June-September, from 10-12. Try a new dish made by one of our international guest chefs highlighting New Roots crops and served up by our partner Maria from Bread & Roses, with the chance to stock up on some New Roots produce as well. Come hungry!
New Roots is excited to be adding a new garden site this year! Formerly run by The Haven, this new space is beautifully situated central to downtown, but secluded and with a view to Montalto. Gardens take lots of love and work and we need your support to make it grow. You can help us reach our $10,000 goal for site clearing and clean-up, fencing, a shade structure, running water and irrigation, and perennial edibles and flowers!
