This tax season, the IRC in Atlanta partnered with United Way of Greater Atlanta as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site, providing free tax preparation services to refugees, asylees and Special Immigrant Visa recipients. The IRC in Atlanta’s Financial Coach, Brigitte Bowser, served as the VITA Site Coordinator, recruiting 18 dedicated volunteer tax preparers who completed training and received IRS certification.

Over ten weeks, the IRC’s VITA team helped 222 refugee households to file their 2018 taxes, helping families access over $200,000 in federal and state returns. “Our volunteers were extremely reliable and diligent, and were dedicated to helping tax payers resolve complex tax issues and file accurately and on time,” said David Oliver, Economic Empowerment Manager. “The IRC in Atlanta’s Economic Empowerment team of employment specialists, career and business counselors, and our financial coach will continue to work closely with clients as they manage their tax returns and continue to build their assets and increase their economic resilience.”

Many of the VITA volunteers were inspired by the IRC’s economic empowerment programming and have committed to staying on as long-term volunteers. We are so grateful for the dedication and support of our VITA volunteers and look forward to working with them for future tax seasons to come.
