As much has changed in the past year, one thing remains the same. Interns remain a vital force in IRC’s work nationwide, and especially in our work here in New York and New Jersey. This semester, over 65 talented interns are at work with IRC in New York and New Jersey as we ramp up for anticipated increases in refugee arrivals this year.
As students return to virtual, hybrid, and in-person semesters, they are also crucially supporting IRC’s work through internships with resettlement, economic empowerment, New Roots, education and learning, and immigration. Often, these students are on their paths towards degrees in social work, international relations, law, psychology, political science, women and gender studies, and philosophy, among other fields of study that overlap with the multi-faceted work of refugee resettlement and immigrant support services. These hardworking teammates help locate housing for new arrivals, build job readiness skills, interpret across IRC and external services, and prepare client files for their immigration paths.
In past cycles, interns have worked with clients young and old at our bustling Elizabeth and New York City offices. With COVID-19 precautions in place, however, internship services are nearly all virtual. While this poses challenges for IRC staff, teams and clients, this has also expanded the opportunity to work with IRC in New York and New Jersey to potential interns who may live outside of the tri-state area. While IRC enjoys close recruiting partnerships with local universities like Rutgers University, Columbia University, Fordham University, New York University and others, virtual service work has welcomed interns from across the country, including interns in Michigan, Texas and California, as we navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by COVID-19 together.
As we begin this new year and semester, we’re excited to recognize this talented new pool of interns and volunteers, and look forward to all they will achieve in the months to come!
