Hospitality training in action at the IRC in Silver Spring
Through the Hospitality Link job training program, participants learn widely usable soft skills, explore career paths in hospitality and visit hospitality workers in action. The International Rescue Committee in Silver Spring is one of five IRC offices piloting the program.
A taste of American culture for refugee families
On September 29, the International Rescue Committee in Silver Spring invited 50 clients, family mentors, and staff to the Nationals baseball game in Washington, DC for an evening of family fun. The game was a great opportunity to build community, eat burgers and fries from Shake Shack, and provide a break from the stress of Back-to-School season.
Eritrean Refugee Rebuilds Her Life in Maryland
While the plight of war refugees is in the news, and deservedly so, the struggle of refugee families from Eritrea is not often in the headlines. Located in Northern Africa, Eritrea is led by an oppressive regime, with few rights for its people. Thousands flee each month in search of survival and a better life. Over the last seven years, the International Rescue Committee in Silver Spring has resettled hundreds of Eritrean refugees. Because Eritrean refugees are at risk if they are identified, the subject of our story – who we will call “H” – did not want to be named. This is her story.

Community Support at the IRC in Silver Spring: Highlighting KindWorks
Since May 2017, KindWorks has worked with the IRC in Silver Spring to set-up and furnish apartments for three newly arriving refugee families. Their efforts to engage local volunteers provides invaluable support to new refugee families and makes refugees feel welcome in our community.
