Refugees improve job skills at Love Turlock event
Turlock-area volunteers helped IRC clients gain valuable economic empowerment skills May 19 during the Love Turlock day of community service. Several Afghan clients who formerly served the U.S. government in their home country received the opportunity to practice job interviews, improve their English skills, and receive cashier's training. The project was one of many taking place throughout Turlock during the day.

More than a dozen Stanislaus County residents forged bonds with refugee clients from the IRC in Turlock/Modesto on April 21, as they helped them with job interview practice during the 10th annual Love Modesto day of community service.

Two Syrian refugee families from Turlock and two Afghan families from Modesto took time to get family portraits in their new home. Gazing at his family posing in an almond orchard, Adnan Alnabosi from Syria said, “I’m so happy to be in a safe place.”

Refugee Civics Day in Turlock helps newly arrived refugees feel safe
The City of Turlock aims to provide a warm welcome to new refugee arrivals. On Refugee Civics Day, refugee clients and interpreters of the IRC are invited to engage in conversation about the city's inner workings and practical skills like how to dial 9-1-1. Refugee families who have fled war and persecution are made to feel safe for the first time in many years are they arrive on U.S. soil. Refugees from Afghanistan and Syria participated in the activities at Turlock City Hall and reflected on how far they had come since their initial resettlement and what they hope to achieve with their new chance at life.
IRC to host Home for the Holidays event
The IRC in Turlock/Modesto is excited to announce a date and location for our upcoming Welcome Home for the Holidays party! The multicultural party will take place at 6 p.m. Jan. 10 (a Wednesday evening) at the Assyrian American Civic Club of Turlock, 2618 N. Golden State Blvd., Turlock CA 95382.

Syrian refugees find new home in Turlock
Since arriving in Turlock from Syria in May 2016, Alnabolsi and his wife, Monira Alzin, have gone for walks around Donnelly Park and made themselves familiar with the city’s different stores. He’s passed his driving test, and the couple has gone sightseeing in San Francisco. So far, they’ve made a home for themselves here in the United States, but one thing is missing: their son.
