Asylum seekers living at Moria on the Greek island of Lesbos are contemplating suicide in alarming numbers, according a new brief released by the IRC which outlines steps that need to be taken, urgently, to address the escalating mental health needs of those who reside at Moria.

In a statement released on May 9, 2017, 15 nongovernmental humanitarian organizations (NGOs) urged the Greek government to immediately reverse the recent policy excluding asylum-seekers on the Greek islands who appeal negative asylum decisions from the possibility of participating later on in the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) program and forcing those who wish to participate to forego their right to appeal.

This briefing aims to bring attention to ongoing issues of concern and provide concrete recommendations for improving the response for this highly vulnerable group of children.
