Through our partnership with FoodCorps—part of the AmeriCorps service network—the IRC in Atlanta has been able to expand our gardening and nutrition education programming into two DeKalb County elementary schools. Our incredible 2020-21 FoodCorps service member, Laura Diaz-Villaquiran, adapted quickly to virtual teaching and provides culturally appropriate, garden-based lessons to over 150 DeKalb County K-3 students.

This summer, the New Roots department selected three high school students from refugee families to be a part of the recently created Youth Food Justice Internship.

The IRC in Salt Lake City is currently running a series, “Refugee Resettlement”, describing our efforts to resettle and serve refugees and their families who now call the Beehive State “home.” Part three, the final in the series, focuses on the programs and services offered to support refugees’ and New Americans’ efforts to positively integrate beyond resettlement.

Jonessa White, maternal & child health specialist, quickly responded to families raising concerns about food insecurity. Through a food access assessment, Jonessa’s team quickly identified and addressed language-accessibility barriers to educational resources.
