Violence in the city: a systematic review of the drivers of violence against displaced populations

Little is known about types and drivers of violence and interventions to reduce violence among displaced and host populations in urban areas. To this end, the IRC conducted a systematic review to research the current state of knowledge regarding the drivers of violence, the contributing factors of violence or rights violations, and programming to address violence among displaced and host populations in crisis and post-crisis urban areas.

Beyond Urbanization: Farming for Fulfillment: Rebuilding Fertile Urban Spaces

This September, the New Roots Community Farm’s (NRCF) community members came together to rebuild the farm. This project consisted of transplanting new plants, weeding, and installing sturdier plant beds. The New York Restoration Project also joined the NRCF in these efforts to execute the rebuild. The IRC in NY sat with Sheryll Durrant, the Food and Agriculture Coordinator at IRC in NY, to learn about the impact of this rebuild and the vision of the NRCF as a whole.

Empowerment

Millions of people across the world don’t have control over important choices that affect their lives, such as where they live, how they live, and how they are governed. Women and girls, in particular, struggle to advocate for their rights and make their voices heard. These issues are worsened by crises, which often uproot families, tear apart communities, and weaken government systems.

Economic wellbeing

Economic wellbeing means people have their most basic survival needs met and have sustainable income and assets so they can prosper. During and after crises, people may be forced to make short-term decisions to survive—such as pulling children out of school to work—that will have long-term negative consequences. The International Rescue Committee helps them meet immediate needs and build a brighter future.
