Angelica did not want to take her family and risk the violence and poverty she had fled in Mexico, nor did she wish to continue living in the shadows of being undocumented in the U.S. She thought the only other option would be to tear their family apart with one parent living on each side of the border.

Dede Shimiyimana was resettled by the IRC in Atlanta in 2015, after living with his family in a Ugandan refugee camp for 18 years. Now, Dede is one of our very own resettlement caseworkers, helping other refugees rebuild their lives and thrive, just as he has, here in Atlanta.

With the help of partner nonprofits—Decatur Makers and House of SpeakEasy—students attending the IRC in Atlanta’s “Ready, Set, College!” summer camp were able to build a “Little Free Library” for the Clarkston High School New Roots Garden.
