The Immigration Program at IRC in Salt Lake City provides New American clients with comprehensive support to clients applying for US citizenship: offering administrative support, education, and one-on-one coaching to help prepare for the naturalization process.
SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK: Under the supervision of IRC staff and volunteers, Civics & Citizenship Tutors will provide one-on-one virtual citizenship tutoring to refugee and New American program participants. Citizenship Mentors tutor program participants remotely via video chat, once or twice per week for 2 hours. Tutoring sessions will focus on preparing the program participant for the U.S. naturalization test, including basic English skills.
COMMITMENT: Minimum of 3 months, 2 hours per week
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide one-on-one virtual citizenship tutoring to refugee and New American program participants.
- Tutor program participants remotely via video chat, once or twice per week for 2 hours.
- Tutoring sessions will focus on preparing the program participant for the U.S. naturalization test, including basic English skills.
- Schedule is flexible, based on volunteer availability and client’s schedule. Evenings and/or Weekends usually needed.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Interest in preparing clients for the naturalization test
- Strong verbal communication skills in English
- Availability: Twice a week, 1 hour sessions are best for client. Availability on weekends preffered. Flexibility required.
- 3-6 month committment to Civics and Citizendship program.
- Willingness to commit hours of time and effort to your client, this volunteer opportunity is much more engaging.
- COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement: In accordance with IRC’s duty to provide and maintain a workplace that is free of known hazards and our commitment to safeguard the health of our employees, clients, and communities, IRC requires all volunteers who are interested in providing in-person support for our work to furnish proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be onboarded for the position.
